Sidmouth Town Junior Viking Raiders U9's Match Report (Sat 19th March) by Simon James

Feniton Lions 0 v 0 Sidmouth Viking Raiders

The game started hard with Feniton aggressively pushing up field, Finlay Morgan wasted no time in stopping the momentum. Isaac James was soon tested with a hard strike, from a feniton forward. With Ben Scrivens stonewall defending, Sidmouth pushed back hard. George Salter and Alex Mitchell nearly opened the scoring from a classy pass from Theo Burne. Sidmouth demonstrated some of the best passing and tackling skills of the season, frustrating Feniton who could not get near the Sidmouth goal.

After half time and some substitutions from both Managers Sidmouth piled on the pressure with some confident strong corners from Cole Monaghan but unable to be converted by the Sidmouth forwards into goals. Thomas West and Ben Scrivens in defence relentlessly blocked any effort by Feniton to attack Sidmouth goal area. The remainder of the game was a well matched and hard fought battle with neither team scoring.

Ottery St Mary 1 v 0 Sidmouth Viking Raiders

Ottery opened with a fast and hard attack on sidmouth, only to be stopped by Thomas West and Finlay Morgans trademark stonewall defending, Theo Burne further frustrated the Ottery attack. Isaac James made two quality saves from two Ottery corners. Then it was Sidmouths turn to push forward. George Salter, Col Monaghan and Jake Jones displayed some excellent passing skills as they relentlessly attacked the Ottery defence but were unable to convert their efforts into a goal. A rapid free kick was awarded to Ottery, which ended up with them poaching a goal.

After half time Sidmouth wasted no time and Scot Gibson and Ben Scrivens attacked hard but again couldn't penetrate the big ottery defence. Alex Mitchell went in hard but the much needed equaliser eluded Sidmouth. The remainder of the game was a well matched and energetic to and fro with neither team giving an inch in defending and attacking. ENDS

Pinhoe Trojans 5 v 2 Sidmouth Viking Raiders

The game started hard with Pinhoe aggressively pushing up field, Ollie Jones wasted no time in stopping the momentum. Isaac James was soon tested with a couple of hard strikes, which he managed to save while Thomas West and Finlay Morgan strenghtened up the Raiders defence. Ben Scrivens' quick tackle enabled Jake Jones to break free and made a speedy run towards the Pinhoe goal, unfortunatly to be denied by their keeper.
Pinhoe scored just before half time from a corner. After 1/2 time Sidmouth came back fast and strong, Scot Gibson and George Salter stunned the Pinhoe midfield and Alex Mitchell scored from ten yards.
Pinhoe obviously "rattled" by this goal all pushed forward overrunning the Raiders Defence and scored twice in quick succession. Pinhoes attack was relentless and it wasn't long before they had added another couple of goals to their tally. Theo Burne and Cole Monaghan pushed hard and with some superb teamwork from Scot Gibson and Alex Mitchell, Alex managed to poach a much needed goal for the Raiders.

Pinhoe Pirates 2 v 2 Sidmouth Viking Raiders

Sidmouth started well with some classy passing between Alex Mitchell and Finlay Morgan setting Cole Monaghan up for the first goal of the match. Scot Gibson nearly scored again but for the regrouping Pinhoe defence. Pinhoe hit back with a strong attack only to be stonewalled by Ollie Jones backed up by Thomas West. A free kick allowed Pinhoe to equalise just before 1/2 time.
In the second half, Theo Burne and George Salter were all over the Pinhoe strikers, then a joint effort between Jake Jones and Scot Gibson scored again. Isaac James was kept busy in goal with some superb saves from the Pinhoe attack. Ben Scrivens and Cole Monaghan tried to stop a last minute push from Pinhoe which saw then equalise in the last few seconds of the game.

Sidmouth Raiders U9s (1) 1 v Central Rovers (1) 1

A good team needs character, Raiders have that. 1-0 down to a penalty after 2 minutes under the cosh for the next 10 conceeding 8 corners. It would have been easy to fold. Isaac James made 2 good saves, Ben Scrivens and Oliver Jones defended admirably against some of the best wing play seen this season.Cole Monaghan added to the defensive steel. George Salter saw every 40/60 ball as a 50/50 challenge to win. Jake Jones shooting just wide to ease the pressure.

Then the game changes Oliver Jones with a superb defence splitter pass Rovers start to wonder, a 3 man move ends in a Scott Gibson lob over the keeper to equalise.Half time changes then saw a to and fro 2nd half that drew superlatives from the Rovers coach.Thomas West clearing long and Theo Byrne and Finlay Morgan able to press forward with pace. Alex Mitchell's darting runs and movement forced Rovers to play extra numbers at the back. Chances for both sides a draw a fair result. Well Done Raiders.

Sidmouth Raiders U9s (2) 3 v Central City (1) 1

Another sign of a good team is the ability to change the way you play and where you play. Storming to a 2 goal lead through a savvy Cole Monaghan shot after spotting a short corner opportunity and a Scott Gibson curling left footer. Looking comfy, City struck back, the warnings were there 2 blocked shots by Ben Scrivens and a save by Isaac James before it was 2-1 and the momentum changed. Jake Jones working hard out wide to restore the lead. Half time changes and Raiders took control Theo Byrne and Finlay Morgan "Nijinski and Red Rum" up and down the pitch into everything, you couldnt ask for more.

Oliver Jones and Thomas West dealing easily with sporadic City attacks.Chances came chances missed, finally Alex Mitchell put through on goal one on one with City's large keeper ( wearing 19 it may have been his age, NASA tracked his goal kicks) put the ball through his legs 3-1 game over.Tough opposition playing above their league position.

Real challenge next week against a Pinhoe team averaging 6 goals a game.

Saturday 29th January
Cup Match

CS Tigers U9s (1) 5 Sidmouth Raiders U9s (0) 2

Despite no fixtures next week Raiders were forced by the league to play 3 matches(that is 90 minutes) in one morning inclusive of the 60 mile round trip to Tiverton.

Given only 5 minutes to warm up by our genial hosts in freezing conditions on a rock hard pitch, Raiders should be proud of how they have improved since their last visit. An end to end game against an experienced top 5 team who have only let in 7 goals in total this season. Raiders denied a clear penalty for hand ball on the line were caught by a flexible team formation from Tigers who's speed often outnumbered them near goal. Despite this, unusual errors and a flukey cross come shot led to a cup exit.Tigers manager was impressed by Raiders have a go performance.

An equalising goal from Alex Mitchell and a George Salter goal were proof of continued improvement

League Match

Sidmouth Raiders U9s (0) 2 St Martins (1) 1

A first half that was undoubtedly their poorest saw Raiders behind after another defensive abberation. Alex Mitchell worked hard but with little service, Oliver Jones forcing the opponents back with Cole Monoghan having to defend more than attack. An ear burning half time wake up talk from Tony West saw dramatic change, George Salter through on goal but the keeper saved. Ben Scrivens and Thomas West providing powerful clearnaces and great control.Isaac James became a spectator.

Scott Gibson's shot hammered a post and Finlay Morgan flying down the wing delivered a peach of a cross. Jake Jones spared our blushes with 2 goals one after superb control and turn, the winner bundled in but who cares how, a tiring team had 3 points.St Matins had assumed the game was theirs and suffered by hardly seeing the ball in the 2nd half.

Sidmouth Raiders U9s (0) 0 Dawlish United (0) 2

A game too many, not unexpectedly even the subs had to be subbed due to tiredness. Isaac James made good first half saves, Oliver Jones and Ben Scrivens coping well with a well drilled and confident Dawlish attack. Finlay Morgan and Cole Monaghan shrugging off tiredness to thwart Dawlish and set up attacks. George Salter and Alex Mitchell pressing the defence into numerous hurried clearances to touch. At half time Tony West bravely went for the win Cole moving to defence with fresh legs in Thomas West, Scott Gibson and Jake Jones stepping into midfield. Alas 2 quick goals by Dawlish put paid to a long unbeaten league run. Even at the end the ultra reliable Alex Mitchell beat the keeper but agonisingly the wrong side of the post. Just one of those games boys. Heads up, be proud stay confident and move on.

ps Thanks to Dawlish for offering to play at another date but no thanks to the league for forcing the fixture played

Match Report Saturday 15th January

Stoke Hill U9s (1) 1 Sidmouth Raiders U9s (0) 3

Raiders first league game since 6th Nov.was an even first half encounter with Ben Scrivens defending well against the opposing winger and Theo Byrne and Finlay Morgan strong tackling in midfield. Jake Jones working across the front line to keep Stoke Hill on their toes. However Stoke Hill took the lead with a low shot where previously Issac James once again made two fine saves and caught everything cleanly.

An inspired half time team talk and tactical changes by coach Tony West saw a totally different 2nd half George Salter aggressive ball winning linked midfield to attack allowing an eager Cole Monaghan space to make telling passes. Oliver Jones and Thomas West gave Stoke Hill no attacking room, and Scott Gibson drifting in from wide hit a shot between the keeper and near post for the equaliser. Minutes later another fierce Scott Gibson shot made it 2-1 after great interplay. Cole Monaghan sent Alex Mitchell free to make it 3-1 with Stoke Hill looking shocked at the turn in fortunes and effectively ending the contest.

Broadclyst SC U9s (0) 0 Sidmouth Raiders U9s (0) 2

A defensive Broadclyst relying on long range shots made it hard work for Raiders in the first half, shots by Cole Monaghan and Scott Gibson along with a series of corners failed to break down the opposition.Issac James continued his safe hands performances and Ben Scrivens and Thomas West defended when required with strong clearances.Jake Jones harried and hustled the defenders as George Salter tried to weave an opening.

Cue the half time team talk and once again a series of inspired changes, Theo Burne and Finlay Morgan worked in tandem pushing forward from midfield whilst Oliver Jones ensured the oppositions only player of threat failed to create any further problems. Alex Mitchell added flair upfront and won a penalty. Nervy things penalties especially at 0-0. Alex dispatched top corner 1-0. Ping pong in the Broadclyst penalty area saw Theo Byrne charge down a clearance and follow up for 2-0. Further opportunities through a Finlay Morgan shot just wide threatened more goals as Broadclyst lost shape and hope along with at times their self discipline.

Two good wins for Raiders having dusted off the rustiness from constant postponements and the xmas selection boxes, a big challenge next week away in the cup to CS Tigers.

Sidmouth Town Junior Vikings "U9 Raiders” Cup Match Report Saturday 13th November 2010

“Cup match” Heavitree Tornadoes U9s 2 v 3 Sidmouth Raiders U9s

I doubt that there was a better game at any age level than this truly epic cup battle, Tornadoes seeking revenge for last weeks league defeat eventually succumbed in extra time to Raiders determination and team spirit.

Raiders owed everything to Isaac James who turned in a Premiership goal keeping performance with at least 6 outstanding saves as Tornadoes peppered Raiders goal on the counter attack.

Defenders Oliver Jones, Ben Scrivens and Thomas West were tested to the limit but stood firm with last ditch tackles and heroic clearances, in midfield Finlay Morgan was literally everywhere and Theo Burne time after time turned defence into attack. Scott Gibson showed great control and put in some tantalising left foot crosses. George Salter a constant threat driving forward with ferocious tackling.

Raiders led with a 2nd minute goal when Alex Mitchell put through Jake Jones for an assured finish, Raiders were pegged back only for Cole Monaghan to fire a fierce trademark shot into the net, alas not the winner as Tornadoes forced an equaliser to take it to extra time.

In the last minute with penalties looming Alex Mitchell who had 2 markers all of the match and had nearly snatched the winner a few minutes earlier, broke free to lob the ball over the advancing keeper. Joyous scenes for Raiders and literally tears in the Tornadoes camp. A fantastic team effort.

Sidmouth Town Junior Vikings "U9 Raiders” Match Report Saturday 6th November 2010

Sidmouth Raiders u9s continued their excellent league form, as they breezed to two victories, blowing away Heavitree Typhoons and blustering past Heavitree Tornadoes. The rotation system is paying dividends with the team looking stronger as a unit and individually more confident and assured.
Heavitree Typhoons 0 v Sidmouth Raiders 4
Sidmouth stormed to a first minute lead when Jake Jones sped onto a through ball to slip it past the keeper, excellent defending followed from a series of corners by Oliver Jones and Ben Scrivens. Back on the attack the midfield duo of Theo Burne and Cole Monaghan ensured further chances for the attack before George Salter scored an excellent individual second goal before half time.

Half time changes gave Typhoons no respite Thomas West turning defence into attack with strong clearances and Finlay Morgan kept a tough tackling position in midfield with Alexander Mitchell and Scott Gibson continuing where they left off last week with fast interplay that allowed Scott Gibson to score two further goals with left foot shots. As the game turned physical Alexander Mitchell was brought down and taking the resultant free kick saw a deflected shot flip over the bar. A terrific last minute save from Isaac Jones ensured his 5th clean sheet in a row.
A deserved victory for Sidmouth in a physical game

HeavitreeTornadoes 0 v Sidmouth Raiders 2

Tornadoes were a sterner test being above the Raiders in the league, however a terrific team effort from the Raiders with strong dominant defending from messrs Oliver Jones, Ben Scrivens and Thomas West that saw Typhoons restricted to long range efforts and when they did threaten Isaac Jones caught everything cleanly and confidently. The midfield of Cole Monaghan, Theo Burne, Scott Gibson and Finlay Morgan worked tirelessly up and down the pitch, helping defend and attack in equal measure and frustrating Tornadoes at every turn.
George Salter raced in on goal only to be fouled but not hearing a referees whistle he regained his feet played on and drilled to ball into the net as a static Tornadoes defence failed to play to the whistle. George Salter then had a shot tipped onto the post by the keeper only for Alexander Mitchell to race in and force the ball home for his 15th goal of the season and a two nil half time lead.

The second half saw Sidmouth kill the game with a good defensive midfield performance as a stunned Tornadoes pressed hard, nevertheless a superb Theo Burne volley and an Alexander Mitchell rising shot could have increased the scoreline further. Jake Jones made good use of the space on the flanks to continually draw Tornadoes out of position and thwart any chance of a comeback.

Another deserved win. Raiders meet Tornadoes again in the cup next week where revenge will be on the menu.

Sidmouth Raiders (1) V (0) Beacon Knights

A good strong start from the Raiders with good defending from Thomas West, Ben Scrivens and a brilliant save from Isaac James. On the counter attack was a near miss from Jake Jones and with more strong play from George Salter leading to a near miss from Scott Gibson. Just before half time the Raiders were awarded a penalty which Cole Monaghan took and scored. The second half saw more of the same close action with both teams battling for control with some great midfield play from Theo Burne and Finlay Morgan, strong defending from Oliver Jones and Thomas West which lead to an attack by Alexander Mitchell who crossed it in to Finlay Morgan who was unlucky with a close shot.

Sidmouth Raiders (5) V (0) CW Dynamoes

The game started with a strong attack from the Raiders setting Cole Monaghan up for the first goal early into the game. With a good long ball from Theo Burne leading to a fabulous corner taken by Finlay Morgan which unfortunately did not find the back of the net. With Dynamoes counter attack being squashed by Ben Scrivens it was half time. The second half saw Isaac James make a good save which was quickly cleared by Jake Jones to Alexander Mitchell for a strong counter attack. The second goal of the game was crossed in by Thomas West and hit home by Scott Gibson who proved he had found his feet by also scoring the next two. With George Salter narrowly missing the Dynamoes were really feeling the pressure and with the counter attack being squashed by Oliver Jones and Thomas West who play it long to Alexander Mitchell who scored the fifth and final goal of the game.

Sidmouth Town Junior Vikings "U9 Raiders” Match Report Saturday 23rd October 2010

Sidmouth Raiders (6) V (0)Teign Valley Blue

The first goal came from a superb penalty which was taken by George Salter in the first three minutes. Some great play then followed including a lovely back flip by Cole Monaghan some incredibly strong defending by Thomas West and great keeping from Isaac James. More great team play lead to further goals by Scott Gibson of his left foot, Jake Jones and for the second time this season a hat trick from Alexander Mitchell, all of which was played in extremely heavy rain.

Sidmouth Raiders (13) V (0)Teign Valley Red

The Raiders came out undeterred by the very wet conditions and through a very strong defensive team starting with keeper Isaac James, defenders Ben Scrivens, Oliver Jones and Thomas West who held and turned around anything that came within Sidmouths own half, this left the midfield and forwards to concentrate on banging in some goals, of which there were many, Scott Gibson, Jake Jones, and George Salter all scored, Finlay Morgan and Alexander Mitchell both scored 2 with Cole Monaghan and Theo Burne both scoring their first hat tricks of the season. The great result reflects some superb football that was played by the whole team.

Raiders (2) v (2) Alphington
This game started with Sidmouths Jake Jones and Cole Monaghan making a rapid attack into the Alphington defence but were unable to convert the opportunity. Alphington pushed back hard and forced Sidmouth goalkeeper Isaac James to make two hard saves in quick succession, Alphington players were everywhere in the Sidmouth goal area, Thomas West and Finlay Morgan were overrun and Alphington scored their first goal. Sidmouth then bounced back with some quality passing from Alex Mitchell and Scott Gibson setting Cole Monaghan up for the Sidmouth equaliser. Alex Mitchell and Jake Jones again attacked the Alphington defence again and kept up the pressure until the half time whistle went.

At the start of the second half Alphington attacked hard but were stopped by Ollie Jones and Thomas West, Ben Scrivens and Finlay Morgan skilfully moved the ball upfield and Alex Mitchell poached another goal for the Raiders, putting them ahead. The remainder of the game was very physical but evenly matched. Alphington managed to chip in an equaliser in the lest few moments of this exciting game.

Raiders (4) v (4) West Exe
This game started with Jake Jones and Alex Mitchell wasting no time in taking on the West Exe defence. An early corner was converted into Sidmouths first goal by Alex Mitchell. West Exe came back strong and Raiders goalkeeper Isaac James was kept busy as West Exe pressured the defence, eventually equalising. West Exe attacked hard Thomas West and Finlay Morgan worked well together with some quality defending against an aggressive attack from West Exe, who managed to score just before half time.

The second half started fast with Scot Gibson and Ben Scrivens out passing the West Exe attack. With Ollie Jones back on frustrating the West Exe strikers.Thomas West got the ball upfield and Cole Monaghan scored the equaliser. West Exe came back hard and managed to put themselves ahead with a ten yard strike.West Exe, taking advantage sent more forwards down and scored again making the score at this point 4-2. After encouraging words from their coach Tony, the Raiders found new energy and enthusiasm, Finlay Morgan, Ollie Jones and Thomas West, went in hard and fast on the West Exe attack, passing up to Cole Monaghan then converted to a Skilful goal from Alex Mitchell. Sidmouth Town Junior Vikings "U9 Raiders"Match Report Saturday 2nd October 2010

By Simon James

Raiders (0) v (3) Brixington Blues

This was always going to be a grudge match, as it was the Sidmouth Raiders who put an end to an unbeaten Brixington Blues run of form in the very last match of the previous season. The match started with Alexander Mitchell, Scott Gibson and Theo Burne making an aggressive and skilful attack on the Brixington defence. The visitors pushed back hard and thanks to Ollie Jones' trademark stonewall defending, kept the Brixington centre forwards away from the goal. The game was very evenly matched in attacking and defence, until the whistle went at halftime, much to both teams relief.

The second half started as the first half had ended. Thomas West and Ollie Jones were relentlessly tested hard by the Blues forwards, then Blues scored 1-0. Unluckily for Sidmouth a free kick was given and the visitors scored again. Ben Scrivens and Jake Jones, supported by Alexander Mitchell and Cole Monaghan attacked and were denied a couple of chances on goal. Brixington were on the attack again Goalkeeper Isaac James was under constant pressure during the match. Finally the Blues made it 3-0 on the conclusion of this tough and important match.

Raiders (1) v (0) Exmouth Amateurs

After a pep talk from their coach Tony West Sidmouth came out strong against the Exmouth Amateurs. Jake Jones and Cole Monaghan wasted no time in pressurising the Amateurs defence. Scot Gibson and Theo Burne kept up the pressure from the rear with some excellent passing and ball control. For the next ten minutes both teams slogged it out but Sidmouth by far had the better possession during the first half but that much needed goal eluded then when the half time whistle blew.

At the start of the second half Sidmouth were awarded a free kick taken skilfully by Alexander Mitchell and hammered into the back of the net by Jake Jones. Exmouth came back strong into the Sidmouth half but were unable to break through the Ollie Jones and Thomas West defence. George Salter and Ben Scrivens went on the attack showing some superb passing and teamwork. Sidmouth's goalkeeper Isaac James made many hard saves as Exmouth sensing the lack of time, tried their luck on goal in the dying minutes of this exciting game. ENDS
