Sidmouth Raiders produced an outstanding game of football against top of the table visitors Central. The game throughout was a very close fought contest with both sides matching each other for goals but Sidmouth certainly had the most chances and on any other day would have knocked away at least another three to comfortably win this game.
Sidmouth scored first when Skelding neatly by-passed the defence and thumped the ball passed the goalkeeper into the top right corner, unfortunately every time Sidmouth scored Central came straight back to equalize, which proved to be the story of the game. Sidmouth’s second goal came with a ball through the centre of defence from Skelding which found its way through the legs of a Central defender to Hughes who slotted it into the corner. Hughes scored his second goal with a brilliant opportunist header when the Central goalkeeper uncharacteristically fumbled the ball, giving Hughes his chance. With so many chances missed and hitting the cross bar towards the end of the game, Hughes must wonder how he only scored the two.
All the Sidmouth players were excellent and at the end of the game even the Central coach congratulated our coach for giving them one of the hardest games of the season. This shows how far the team has evolved and even with a few missing the players they still have great strength in depth.
Sidmouth did not have one of their best games against a hard working Feniton side but a win is a win and that’s the most important thing. The first goal came from a great dink over the goalkeeper from Hughes, who was on his way to a well earned hatrick, particularly as the Feniton defence were not giving much away. Hughes surely would have scored another but was blatantly tripped in the penalty area, giving Raffell the chance to dutifully put the ball away to make it four. Feniton would not lie down though, they kept the pressure on all the way to the end of the game and thanks to Hopley in goal, who made some fantastic saves they just may have got back into the game.To be fair Sidmouth had quite a few chances of their own including a missed penalty but they kept on battling and did not give up which gave them the reward in the end.
Sidmouth’s impressive run of wins continued with a very composed performance against Exmouth Town . The first goal came from a brilliant strike from Parson’s who drilled the ball low into the bottom corner, giving the goalkeeper no chance. Strikes came thick and fast with many Sidmouth shots unluckily hitting the woodwork or being well saved by the goalkeeper, who certainly saved his team from a much heavier defeat.
Turton scored a second goal assisted by a cross from Miller who had an inspired game in Midfield. A third came from a typical solo run from Hughes who skipped passed the defence to slot the ball home, he added another towards the end of the game to well and truly finish Exmouth off. Harris, Skelding and Turbott all came close to adding to the score line and Sidmouth’s defence of Latham, Gibson, Stamp and Pugsley proved impenetrable in defence frustrating the opposition. McManus and Birkhead both back from illness were very strong in Midfield and Hopley gained a very well earned clean sheet.
on saturdaysidmouth travelled to honitonfor there first league game since december 1st and minus five players who had called in with colds that morning.
sidmouth started the game by takeing a two nil lead in the first five minuteswith goals from turton and gibson who was enjoying playing in a more forward role.
honiton had no answer to sidmouths passing game in the first half breaking down the flanks and through the middle of the pitch for turton and hughes to run on to score four more goals to lead 6-nil at half time. the pick of the goals was from turton who raced on to a through ball and as the keeper ran out to try to stop turton he put the ball to the right of him while he went left of the keeper pele stile to get the ball and run the ball in the goal.
in the second half came out the stronger makeing the sidmouth defence work hard.they got there reward when a honiton corner was turned in to the goal by sidmouth defender.turton soon added his fifth goal to increase the lead but honiton scored again from a good attackand not long after that were awarded a penalty which was saved by hopley in goal.both teams carried on with there attacking football but both teams were getting tired due to the very heavy conditions sidmouth scored three more times before the final whistle one from hughes and a brillant cross come shot from skelding from the left hand side line and the pick of the goals from this half from raffell who collected the ball 20 metres inside his own half and sprinted through the honiton defence to slot home from 18 yards . man of the match was oliver newton who did not put a foot wrong.
This game was arranged by the manager while traveling back from holiday on the friday against the newly
formed exmouth town team.
The manager was hopeing to build on some good performances at the end of last year against some of the top teams in the league.
But the game did not get off to a good start when sidmouth found themselves two nil down in the first ten minutes but they did pull themselves together to get the game all square and before half time conceeded two more goals to be 4 v 2 down.
The half time talk centred around sidmouths first touch been a bit poor and the tackeling a bit weak but after getting back in the game early the manager was not over worried at that moment.
But with in a minute of the restart sidmouth had conceeded another goal because of poor touch and weak tackeling but to the boys credit they tightened there game up and started to play football with goals from scott jordan and jack they got the game back to all square at 5 all.
Sidmouth continued to play good football and took the game to exmouth only to be caught on the break and go behind again but sidmouth came back with the goal of the game when jack slotted home a four past move from keeper to scorer when the whistle went the boys left the pitch to a well desereved round of applause from both sets of supporters.
after thursday defeat in there friendly against the other sidmouth team the manager hoped to carry on with the hard work they put in on thursday.
haveing two games in two days and going back to school seemed to take its toll on the boys been 6 nil down at half time.
the half time talk was about going back to basics and not to panic on the ball.
the second half was a much more even affair with sidmouth only loseing the second half two one but with much improved performance the sidmouth goal was scored by jack gibson which is nice to see on the score sheet more often
after the preseason matchs it was down to the real buisness of the league.
both teams showed there intent from to the start by playing the ball out wide to the wings to make for aopen game.
honiton took the lead from a goal mouth scramble from a corner when a missed kicked shot span in to corner of the net honiton scored again when there attacker out sprinited the defence to slot home.
sidmouth steppedup there work rate and pulled a goal back when drew birkhead keeped his cool to score. sidmouth pushed for the equalizer and when scott hughes muscled his way through two honiton defenders to score to bring the first half to a end.
in the second half both teams kept up with this tempo of end to end football with both defences haveing to work hard to keep the scores level.then the game tip in sidmouth favour when scott huges scored his second goal.from the restart pressed trying to increase there lead .the ball was played out to the left were matt skelding took the ball down the line in to the box and fire a fierce shot between defender and post.
honiton got back in the game with five minutes to go when ther attacker lobbed the keeper but sidmouth hung on to the win to the great relief of the supports and players who where over the moon to get there season of to a good start.
man of the match went to the hole team
sidmouth travelled to moors youth not noing a lot about there opponents but they soon found out that this team should be in a higher league.when they found them selfs 6 nil down in the first 20 minutes that force sidmouth in to a couple of early subs bringing on leon mcmanus and matt skelding to add a bit of bite to the midfield which seemed to work when rueben won the ball in the middle of the pitch and passed the ball out to matt skelding who burst down the left to cross the ball in to scott hughes who slotted the ball home.
moors did score again before halftime but the much improved performance in the last 15 minutes had given sidmouth new hart for the second half.
in the second half sidmouth got drew to man mark the moors youth play maker and this made a big change with sidmouth pulling two more goals back one more for scott and a first for the new signing oliver turton who lobbed the keeper from 25 yards.
moors were still creating chances but the defence and keeper were keeping them at bay.but when sidmouth had to take drew off due to a injury it ment there play maker had more space and help moors youth to score two more goals to make the final score.9 .3 apart from the the first twenty minutes this was a very even game with both teams trying to play football special mention for kieran hopley in goal who pulled off 4 first class saves in the game
after two weeks with out a game it was thought that the boys would be up for this but from the start you could tell it was going to be one of those games.
sidmouth did take the lead when oliver turton fired home while at the other end seaton keeped missing the target sidmouth did create a couple of more chances from oliver turton and a header from drew birkhead before seaton scored two goals late on in the first half.
the second half was nearly all one way traffic with seaton scoreing 9 unanswered goals sidmouths best chance fell to oliver turbitt whos shot nearly sneaked under the keeper.
wel done to seaton who took advantage of sidmouths mistakes
sidmouth were told to wake up after a disappointing result last week and thankfully they did just that.
the game got off to a perfect start for sidmouth with a penalty within the first minute, after a rash challenge by a crediton defender, raffell coolly converted the penalty to take sidmouth into an earlylead.
it was only a matter of time before sidmouth were to score again following numerous excellent through balls to turton, who was unluckey not to come away with at least a hat trick from his many attempts on goal, but deservedly got this long awaited goal towards the end off the game with a fantastic volley into the top left corner from a pinpoint ball crosseed in from skelding.
it was hughes who came away with a superb hat trick again the resut of excellent back up and passing from the midfield players with both mcmanus and birkhead having an excellent game.
sidmouths defence which had been so shaky last week held strong with the added speed and awareness of gibson, complimenting the hard working defenceive line up overall this was a very accomplished performance from the players.
match report from amrk skelding
on saturday sidmouth travelled to feniton down to the bare eleven players due to injury and half term holidays.
in the first half playing down the slope sidmouth carved out plenty of chances but could noy find the back of the net.
feniton took the lead when they scored from a counter attack. a fine save from kieran hopley stopped feniton increaseing the lead before haf time.
the second half didnt start well for sidmouth with feniton scoreing two quick goals.
sidmouth started to get back into the game with matt skelding and jordan parsons combining to good affect.sidmouth scored a penalty after joe tweedy was bundled over in the box drew birkhead stepped up to fire the penalty home.
sidmouth were unlucky not to score again when matt skelding crossed to joe tweedy who controlled the ball and sent his shot just wide of the top corner.
feniton scored two more goals before sidmouth had one more chance when jordan parsons charged down the defenders clearance 20 yards froam goal and his first time shot went over the keepers head and just wide.
the score line does not reflect the hard work and chances that sidmouth created.
sidmouth took the short trip to feniton in the cup hopeing to prove a point after the league result two weeks before.
sidmouth went straight at feniton going cose in the first 30 seconds but sidmouth only had to wait a short time before they took the lead when oliver turton scored after two minutes they increased there lead on nine minutes when matt skielding came in from the left to slot his shot home.
it took another 15 minutes before sidmouth scored again with scott hugehes scoreing two goals in three minutes.this didnt stop feniton who had the best of the last 10 minutes puling a goal back and makeing the sidmouth defence and keeper work hard to only conseed one goal before haf time.
at the beginning of the second half sidmouth changed there formation to 3/5/2 to stiffen up the midfield this worked well for sidmouth and made them use the wings to open up the game.with this new game plan it was not long before they increased the lead when oliver turton scored he got his hattrick on 57 mi nutes with another well worked goal.
jordon parsons added another 7 minutes later not to be out done scott hughes completed hes hattrick on 60 minutes the final goal came just before full time when oliver turbitt was sent down the right and out paced the defender to cross to oliver turton to side foot home.everybody but in a top performance but special mention for jack gibson who was outstanding in defence.
sidmoth were full of confidence after thier win last week which was carried forward against central for the majority of the game sidmouth matched a very good central side who had yet lost a game this season.
it was sidmouth who looked the like scoring and within the first few minutes pugsley nearly beat the goal keeper with a fantastic volley from the half way line but against the run of play central took the lead towards the end of the first when they produced a half volley scorcher of a shot that gave hopley no chance of saving.
in the second half sidmouth carried on undaunted playing some wonderful football, chances came regularly with a succession of tweedy corners, putting pressure on the central defence.
parsons came close with several shots just going wide along with a well taken free kick from raffell which was well saved although the final score was 3-0 on another day it could have easily have been a win for sidmouth and they should be proud of the way they played.
match report by mark skelding
sidmouth produced a fantastic display of passing football and totally out classed their opposition.the first goal came not ong into the first half when turton ran into the box and squared the ball acrossthe goal straight to a avishayes defender who under pressure knocked it into his own goal.
sidmouth kept the pressure on with avishayes producing yet another own goal and a third coming from a well placed pass by hughes across the box to turton who skillfully steered it into the corner of the net. pugsley ended a dominant first half for sidmouth with a wonder goal struck from well outside the area.
sidmouth produced more of the same passing football in the second half, which was increasingly exasperating avishayes, who were now making numerous rash challenges much to the annoyance of sidmouth and the referee.the goals continued with hughes scoring with a well timed header and with avishayes desperate for the final whistle further goals came from miller and two from gibson, one of which was a penalty resulting from one of the many unnecessary fouls.
this was another brillant display by sidmouth with the whole team contributing and also growing in confidence, well done to all players and coaches.
match report by mark skelding
sidmouth played exstremely well against first division cullumpton.for the majority of the game sidmouth looked to be the better side, playing some excellent passing footballeven though the pitch condittions were absolutely atrocious and really the game should not have been played most of cullumptons goals were a result of the bad conditions of the pitch, catching our defenders out with the ball stuck in the very muddy penalty area.
sidmouth came close on a couple of occasions with a shot over the bar and a late free kick just going outside the post but the big hero for sidmouth was goalkeeper hopley who in awful conditions produced a very soild performance.
