Match Report Saturday 16th October 2010

After a great display against last season champions the previous week it was the current league leaders Pinhoe Spears for the Sidmouth Warriors U11’s this week.

The first half was a very scrappy affair with few chances at either end. Man of the Match Tom Woodruff was dominant in the Warriors defence and a long range effort from Lowe was all Warriors had to show for their efforts. Nil – Nil was a fair reflection

The second half sparked into life with Pinhoe breaking through the Warriors defence within the first 30 seconds, a confident save from Sinker foiled their attempt. The Warriors began to gain the upper hand in midfield with some strong but fair tackles from both sides. The best 2 chances came in the last 5 minutes for the Warriors a well hit shot from the edge of the box by Tremlett was pushed round the post by Pinhoes keeper, and a great cross from McCullin found Jones unmarked at the far post on his favoured left foot. His shot was heading for the goal but the keeper got his face in the way and it went out for a corner. One last chance for Pinhoe saw Sinker mark a great display with an important save making the final score Nil – Nil.

The Warriors have had two tough weeks but are getting stronger as a team, and I’m sure it wont be long before they gain their first win.

Team; Leon Sinker, Kade Hayman, Matt Jones, Tom Woodruff, Joe Lowe , Jack Silks, Ben Gosse , Luke Tremlett, James McCullin, Ethan Mead and Joe Buckland.

Match Report Saturday 23rd October 2010

Sidmouth Warriors U11’s finally got their season up and running with a convincing win against St Martins.

KH

In the first half it took St Martins to score first to wake up the Warriors, but wake them up it did. Joe Lowe in midfield started winning every ball, Jones Hayman and Woodruff dominated at the back allowing Silk Buckland and McCullin to pass the ball around in midfield. Man of the Match Ethan Mead up front had an outstanding day causing St Martins defence trouble every time he got the ball. Meads speed was electric and as he sped away from his marker he slotted the equaliser home. Then 5 minutes later a perfect pass from Lowe put Mead through and he smashed the ball home to make it 2-1 at half time.

The half time team talk didn’t go to plan and St Martins equalised within 2 minutes of the restart. However the Warriors determination shone through as they were winning every 50/50 battle throughout the pitch. 3 goals in 10 minutes were just what the Warriors needed and deserved. Silk scored from a follow up, Mead scored his third for a perfect hat-rick and Tremlett got the fifth after a long range shot from Woodruff. St Martins did pull one back but the smiles and cheers at the final whistle showed what it meant to everyone associated with the team.

Team; Leon Sinker, Kade Hayman, Matt Jones, Tom Woodruff, Joe Lowe , Jack Silks, Luke Tremlett, James McCullin, Ethan Mead and Joe Buckland.

Match Report Saturday 13th November 2010

Nov 13th

Sidmouth Warriors U11’s ground out a victory in the first round of the cup against Inter Heavitree.

The game was late kicking off which meant the Warriors had the bear nine players due to Rugby Commitments. The Warriors started really slowly and the game was contested in midfield early on with Joe Lowe leading by example making some big tackles to win the ball, unfortunately no sooner had he won back possession the Warriors gave it away again. Gosse went close, before a corner from Inter caused problems in the Warriors defence and despite Sinkers best efforts the ball was forced over the line to give Inter the lead. To their credit the Warriors then woke up and fought their way back into the game before half time when a pin point pass from Lowe found Gosse whose clever placement made the half time score 1-1.

The second half was still a scrappy affair, but the Warriors never stopped fighting and even though their passing game didn’t really happen the team got stronger as the game went on. Man of the Match Joe Buckland was outstanding ,as a makeshift right back he won every tackle and his distribution was very good. Warriors then turned their team spirit into creating chance after chance, Gosse, Buckland, McCullin all going close before the hard working Tremlett scored to give Sidmouth a deserved lead. This lifted the team and a great shot from McCullin was turned round the post before territorial advantage produced the move of the match when a great pass from McCullin was jubilantly slotted home by Tremlett for a hard fought 3-1 victory.

Team; Leon Sinker, Matt Jones, Tom Woodruff, Joe Lowe , Jack Silk, Luke Tremlett, James McCullin, Ben Gosse and Joe Buckland.

Match Report Saturday 27th November 2010

Despite a heavy frost the pitch was playable but the wind chill factor and lack of sun made it a very cold morning for both teams and sets of supporters. Alphington started the better and scored first but the fighting spirit of the Warriors especially their Captain and Man of the Match Joe Lowe saw the Warriors equalise when Mead forced the ball home after some hesitation in the Rockets defence. The game was then fought in midfield for a while before 2 excellent goals from Alphington saw them lead 3-1 at half time.

A quick change around at half time saw the Warriors come out of the blocks quicker and after some great work from the impressive McCullin, Silk made it 2-3. Alphington then stepped up a gear and despite some brave defending by Hayman, Jones and Woodruff Alphington scored 2 more. Instead of lying down the Warriors then had their best spell and Silks second was a brilliant move involving some great passing between Tremlett and Buckland before Silk smashing home. As the fightback insued the brave Sinker lost all feeling in his hands and as Goalkeeper had no choice other than to come off and get warm. Alphington scored 3 more before the end to make the final score 8-3. It was very unfair reflection on the Warriors who certainly gave everything and showed a never say die spirit. Roll on the warmer weather!

Team; Leon Sinker, Kade Hayman, Matt Jones, Tom Woodruff, Joe Lowe , Jack Silk, Luke Tremlett, James McCullin, Ethan Mead and Joe Buckland.

Match Report Saturday 8th January 2011

Sidmouth Warriors U11’s found table toppers Pinhoe Spears well organised and well disciplined and in the end lost comprehensively.

The Warriors were quick out of the blocks after a 5 week layoff, for the first ten minutes they dominated winning battles all over the pitch with Man of the Match Joe Lowe covering every blade of grass. Shots from Lowe, Gosse and a Gosse header all went close but totally against the run of play Pinhoe scored. This changed the game completely and from this point Pinhoe passed well keeping their shape throughout and scored another 2 before half time. Pinhoe were absolutely clinical they had 3 shots in the first half and scored from all of them.

The next goal was going to be crucial and for 20 minutes of the second half the Warriors did everything they could, their usual passing game deserted them but they did carve out chances, a James McCullin cross was put narrowly wide by Gosse. Then the impressive McCullin had a shot and header just miss the target before Meads left foot shot hit the post and agonisingly didn’t cross the line. Within a minute of that Pinhoe broke away and scored their fourth. Tired legs then set in for the Warriors and Pinhoe scored another 2 before the final whistle to make it a 6-0 defeat for the Warriors.

The Warriors need to learn from teams like Pinhoe on how to keep your shape and organisation throughout the game. Plenty to work on in training this week.

Team; Leon Sinker, Kade Hayman, Matt Jones, Tom Woodruff, Joe Lowe , Jack Silk, Luke Tremlett, James McCullin, Ethan Mead and Ben Gosse.

Match Report Saturday 5th February 2011

Sidmouth Warriors U11’s best performance of the season saw them unlucky not to take all 3 points against a strong Dawlish side.

On a windy morning by the coast in Dawlish the Warriors started brightly winning every tackle and playing some great passing football. Against the wind in the first half the Warriors created the best chances with Jones and Man of the Match McCullin on either wing putting in great performances and Mead commanding at the back sweeping up everything. It was headed towards a scoreless draw at half time when a slip at the back let in Dawlish to score against the run of play at the end of the half.

Away at West Exe

With the wind behind them in the second half the Warriors didn’t let the goal affect them and attack after attack saw them go very close. Gosse, McCullin and Silk with the pick of the chances. It looked like one of those days and when the Dawlish Manager admitted they should have been 3-1 down instead of 1-0 up it was a very fair reflection. The Warriors kept on trying with some great passing moves instigated by Lowe and Buckland. Then with 10 minutes to go a free kick 20 yards out by Lowe was notched home by Gosse. This led to a frenetic last 10 with chances at either end but try as they might the Warriors couldn’t force home the winner making the final score 1-1.

A fantastic team performance with 11 players fighting and working for each other made the manager and parents extremely proud.

Team; Leon Sinker, Kade Hayman, Matt Jones, Tom Woodruff, Ethan Mead, Joe Lowe , Jack Silk, Luke Tremlett, James McCullin, Joe Buckland and Ben Gosse.

Match Report Saturday 12th February 2011

Sidmouth Warriors U11’s were unlucky to come away with nothing against an excellent West Exe side.

On a sunny morning in Exeter it was West Exe who started the strongest with Sinker making some fine early stops in the Warriors goal. The Warriors then began to find their feet and squandered some good chances before a very cool finish by McCullin put them one up. Within a minute though West Exe equalised. This only spurred the Warriors on and for the next 10 minutes they were dominant and only a fine save from their goalie pushing a Buckland shot onto the bar kept the score at 1-1. When you don’t take your chances you’re always likely to concede and that’s exactly what the Warriors did just before half time.

awat at West Exe

The second half was as enjoyable as the first and some clinical finishing by West Exe saw them go 4-1 up. The Warriors then had their best spell and attack after attack saw everything but the finish, Silk, Jones and Lowe all going close before Mead scored a great individual goal to make it 4-2. With the Warriors chasing more goals the game got stretched and they got caught short at the back on 3 more occasions again with West Exe’s clinical finishing. The Warriors never gave up and Man of the Match Silk pulled another back at the end before Tremlett hit the post. The whistle went showing a 7-3 defeat which really wasn’t a true reflection of the game. The Warriors gave everything and should be really proud of their performance.

Team; Leon Sinker, Kade Hayman, Matt Jones, Tom Woodruff, Ethan Mead, Joe Lowe , Jack Silk, Luke Tremlett, James McCullin and Joe Buckland.

Match Report Saturday 26th February 2011

Fantastic was the only way to describe Sidmouth Warriors U11’s quarter final cup victory against high flying Alphington Rockets.

On a sticky pitch the Warriors passion, commitment and determination shone through right from the kick off. They were first to every ball, didn’t let Alphington play and created numerous chances before a McCullin stike deservedly put the Warriors into the lead. Hayman, Lowe and Jones were dominant at the back and when Alphington did get through Sinker made some fine saves in goal. Gosse and Silk in the centre of midfield were superb winning every 50/50 and distributing the ball wide to the excellent Buckland on the left and McCullin on the right. Mead up front was a right handful for the Alphington defence. To go in only 1-0 up at half time was unlucky on the Warriors.

The second half saw the introduction of the fresh legs of Tremlett who never stopped running, chasing and tackling. Alphington equalised from a corner, this only spurred the Warriors on, they really wanted to win this match so upped their game. With 15 minutes to go Buckland got his goal he’d been craving for weeks and you could sense the Warriors really believed in themselves. From two Buckland corners the Warriors killed the game off with fine strikes by Lowe and McCullin with his second. The final whistle on a 4-1 win saw jubilation throughout the Warriors team and supporters and the excitement of a semi final in a couple of weeks.

Well done boys we are all so proud of you!.

Team; Leon Sinker, Kade Hayman, Matt Jones, Ben Gosse, Ethan Mead, Joe Lowe , Jack Silk, Luke Tremlett, James McCullin and Joe Buckland.

Match Report Saturday 5th March 2011

Try as they might Sidmouth Warriors U11’s couldn’t find a way through against Dawlish United in the League.

In a first half of few chances at either end, strong tackling from Woodruff, Lowe and Hayman kept Dawlish at bay. Buckland and Silk tried to make things happen in midfield but every time they found Mead up front he had two people marking him. Shots from McCullin and Jones went close, while at the other end Sinker made 2 fine saves to make the half time score 0-0.

The second half saw the Warriors start slowly and this cost them with Dawlish scoring 2 goals in the first 10 minutes. They then really gave it a go with Tremlett, Silk and Mead all going close before Dawlish killed off the game with a breakaway goal. Further shots from Mead troubled their keeper but couldn’t find the net to make the final score 3-0 to Dawlish.

Team; Leon Sinker, Kade Hayman, Matt Jones, Tom Woodruff, Ethan Mead, Joe Lowe , Jack Silk, Luke Tremlett, James McCullin and Joe Buckland.

Match Report Saturday 12th March 2011

Sidmouth Warriors U11’s were unlucky not to get anything out of the local derby with West Hill Wasps.

In the first half it was the Warriors that started the brightest creating a number of chances with Mead and Woodruff going close, but it was West Hill who took the lead with a fierce drive that Sinker had no chance with. Jones and Hayman’s strong tackles encouraged the Warriors to up their game and Tremlett and Woodruff went close without success making the half time score 1-0.

The second half saw the Warriors totally dominate and justice was done when a shot from Silk was parried by their goalkeeper and Tremlett following in smashed it into the net to equalise. Soon after a corner from Silk saw Haymans bullet header crash back off the crossbar. Further chances from Man of the Match Woodruff and Lowe didn’t find the net and with 3 minutes left West Hill did a smash and grab. A long ball over the top saw their speedy striker beat Sinker and the defenders to the ball and literally follow the ball into the net. Try as they might there was not enough time for the Warriors and the final whistle sounded on a 2-1 defeat.

An excellent team performance deserved more.

Team; Leon Sinker, Kade Hayman, Matt Jones, Tom Woodruff, Ethan Mead, Joe Lowe , Jack Silk, Luke Tremlett, Ben Gosse and Joe Buckland.

Match Report Saturday 19th March 2011

Sidmouth Warriors U11’s dominated the local derby against Exmouth but couldn’t find a way through.

Before the kick off the Warriors lost keeper Sinker to injury and Hayman took over in goal with a flawless performance. In the first half it was the Warriors who created numerous chances before a 20 yard free kick from Exmouth crashed against the bar. The defence of Woodruff, Mead and Jones were excellent stopping anything Exmouth tried. Both Tremlett and Buckland went close before the half time whistle blew with the game 0-0.

The second half saw the Warriors totally dominate and up the pace of the game with some great passing moves involving Silk, McCullin, Gosse and Lowe. Try as they might the Warriors just couldn’t force the ball home. A dozen chances came and went before Exmouth had a couple of chances at the end which Mead and Hayman dealt with outstandingly. The final whistle sounded on a 0-0 draw which didn’t do justice to a fantastic game of football.

An excellent team performance.

Team; Leon Sinker, Kade Hayman, Matt Jones, Tom Woodruff, Ethan Mead, Joe Lowe , Jack Silk, Luke Tremlett, Ben Gosse, James McCullin and Joe Buckland.

Match Report Monday 21st March 2011

CUP FINAL HERE WE COME!

Sidmouth Warriors U11’s continued their amazing cup run by beating Pinhoe Pikes under floodlights after extra time to deservedly reach the final at St James Park on May 8th.

After a nervy start by both teams the solid defence of Hayman, Mead and Jones gave the Warriors a platform to start playing their football against determined opposition. Sinker in goal didn’t have a lot to do and that is credit to the players in front of him. Silk and McCullin were a constant threat down the wings. Shots from Buckland, Tremlett and Woodruff went close but full time ended 0-0.

Extra Time started with the Warriors in control, they got stronger as the game went on and a wonder strike from Captain Lowe from 20 yards flew into the net to the joy of the players, coaches and supporters. The confidence then shone through for the Warriors and a fabulous second goal sealed the victory. Gosse passed to Silks whose mazy run down the right and great cross was volleyed into the corner of the net by Buckland. Two fantastic goals fitting to win any game let alone a semi final.

A great night to live long in the memories of everyone involved with the Warriors.

Team; Leon Sinker, Kade Hayman, Matt Jones, Tom Woodruff, Ethan Mead, Joe Lowe , Jack Silk, Luke Tremlett, Ben Gosse, James McCullin and Joe Buckland.

Match Report Saturday 2nd April 2011

Sidmouth Warriors U11’s tried hard but ran out of steam against a good passing team in Stoke Hill Celtic.

The first half was an even contest without the Warriors even getting out of second gear. Some excellent saves by Sinker and some strong defending by Mead kept Stoke Hill out. At the other end Gosse and Silk went close but the half ended 0-0.

away to stoke hill celtic

Some strong words at half time looked to have the desired effect as the Warriors started the second half well. Woodruff and Lowe were bossing midfield with some good passing moves between Buckland and Gosse. One of these saw Gosse out fox his opponent and was unlucky to see his shot come off the bar. Instead of inspiring the Warriors this encouraged Stoke Hill to up there game. The first goal was going to be crucial and that was the way it proved. Some neat passing lead to Stoke Hill finding gaps in the Warriors defence and their small striker found himself in plenty of room to put Celtic one up. The Warriors then seemed to run out of energy and ideas and two further goals from Celtic made the final score 3-0.

Attention now turns to the penultimate game next week where the winner stays up!

Team; Leon Sinker, Kade Hayman, Matt Jones, Ethan Mead, Tom Woodruff, Joe Lowe , Jack Silk, Joe Buckland and Ben Gosse.

Match Report Saturday 9th April 2011

Sidmouth Warriors U11’s gave everything in the bottom of the table clash with St Martins but ended up with nothing.

A slow start by both teams came alive after 5 minutes when a shot from St Matins was going well wide until a sliced attempted clearance diverted it into the net. This shocked the Warriors and gave St Martins the impetus for the next 15 minutes, strong defending by Mead, Jones and Hayman kept them out. This spurred the Warriors on , Silk was have a blinder down the wing. Lowe and Woodruff started winning the midfield battles and McCullin was causing the St Martins defence problems. The half came to an end without either goalkeeper being troubled.

The message at half time was continue with the same commitment and intensity but have some shots, make the goalkeeper work!. That is exactly what happened, for 30 minutes the Warriors gave everything. St Martins were so worried about Silk they had 3 men marking him. Shots from Woodruff, Silk, McCullin and a header from Hayman all went close. At the other end Sinker made 2 great saves. One last push lead to the Warriors best chance when a Lowe through ball put Tremlett one on one with the keeper unfortunately the keeper pulled off a great save to leave the final score 1-0 to St Martins.

The performance and never say die attitude was a credit to the boys.

Team; Leon Sinker, Kade Hayman, Matt Jones, Ethan Mead, Tom Woodruff, Joe Lowe , Jack Silk, Joe Buckland, James McCullin and Luke Tremlett.

Match Report Tuesday 12th April 2011

Stunning was the only way to describe Sidmouth Warriors U11’s performance in their last league match of the season against West Exe. Considering the pressure on them, needing a victory or draw to stay up against the fourth team in the league, the way in which they played cannot be understated.

The Warriors have struggled for goals all season but a new routine in practice paid dividends. Right from the start the Warriors attacked with pace Silk and Tremlett both causing havoc down the wings. The defensive trio of Buckland, the outstanding Mead and Jones kept their shape and defended as a unit allowing West Exe very few chances. The Warriors spent most of the half attacking firing shots in from all over with Tremlett, Silk and McCullin all going close before a McCullin shot was spilled by the keeper, Silk followed up and smashed home. Captain Lowe totally ran the midfield and inspired his team throughout. West Exe pulled one back before a Lowe pass was converted by Tremlett to make the half time score 2-1.

The second half saw the Warriors totally dominate in the first 20 minutes with Silk putting in the performance of the season. His mazy run and pinpoint cross saw Hayman head home a fantastic goal. Minutes later Silks corner was fired home by Hayman again. McCullin couldn’t believe his luck in front of goal on another day he could easily have scored 6 but the post and goalkeeper kept him out. Hayman crashed another shot against the bar before a stunning strike from Silk made it 5. West Exe to their credit never gave up and when the Warriors tired they created a number of chances of their own scoring 1 in the process. The final whistle saw jubilation from the players, coaches and parents after seeing the Warriors fulfil their potential and produce their performance of the season right when they needed it to stay up.

Well done boys.

Team; Kade Hayman, Matt Jones, Ethan Mead, Joe Lowe , Jack Silk, Joe Buckland, James McCullin and Luke Tremlett.

Cup Final Match Report Sunday 8th May 2011

A determined and committed Sidmouth Warriors U11 side took League Champions Pinhoe Spears all the way in the League Cup Final at St James Park, Exeter and were really unlucky to end up losing on penalties.

pre match

The Warriors started off very nervously and for the first 20 minutes Pinhoe dominated. They created a number of chances but only converted one. After this the Warriors settled down, Lowe played a real captains role in midfield and his leadership rubbed off on the rest of the team. The Warriors started closing down and tackling hard and began to create chances of their own. Silk who was outstanding on the wing combined well with McCulin to create chances for themselves, Woodruff and Lowe. The first half ended with Pinhoe in the lead.

goal!

After the half time team talk everybody upped their game and the Warriors began to take control. The move of the game saw Gosse pass to McCullin who laid it invitingly for Silk to strike it into the corner of the net for the equaliser. This put the momentum firmly in the Warriors hands but with 10 minutes of dominance didn’t come the goal. Pinhoe began to fight back and after 6 successive corners their tall midfielder headed them in front. The Warriors never gave up and with 3 minutes of normal time left a Silk shot was parried by their goalkeeper into the path of Hayman who slotted home the equaliser. The whistle blew soon after.

tackle

Extra Time was a very even affair with good defending from both teams. Mead was excellent as sweeper and some good saves from Sinker kept Pinhoe out. While at the other end McCullin, Silk and Hayman all went close. The final whistle blew on a 2-2 draw and the match had to be decided on penalties.

Penalty Save

Five penalties each couldn’t separate the teams as it ended 4-4, sudden death ensued with Pinhoe winning it 5-4.

Devastation and Proudness were the main emotions at the end. Every one of those boys gave their all. I feel very proud to have managed this group of lads, their team spirit is amazing. So close to winning the Cup against the League Champions is a great achievement. They are all winners to me.

Team; Leon Sinker, Kade Hayman, Matt Jones, Ethan Mead, Tom Woodruff, Joe Lowe , Jack Silk, Joe Buckland, James McCullin, Luke Tremlett and Ben Gosse.
